Experience with long reactor runs without main revision, taking five large turbo sets of a lignite power plant as an example

At the beginning of a planned turbine revision, in most cases the question is raised whether such a revision is necessary at the present moment. With the explained strategy we hope to have underlined the advantages of the so-called "condition-oriented maintenance" without having embarked with it on an uncontrollable risk. The solid and sophisticated design, the faultless fabrication and skilled erection as well as the very conscientious commissioning of the plants were a safety factor for our decision. Also the sufficient control instrumentation and thorough maintenance efforts and handling by a well-trained staff are part of it. Admittedly a good deal of luck has contributed to this result, which the engineer also needs, as - despite often made requirements in this direction he is not endowed with the second sight!
