Flue Gas Desulphurisation on Power Plant in the United Kingdom

The application of flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) for sulphur dioxide (SO{sub}2) removal on UK power plant extends from the first FGD system which was at Battersea Power Station, London in 1933 through to the latest generation of FGD systems under development in the UK in order to comply with the European Commission revised Large Combustion Plant Directive (LCPD, 2001/80/EC). FGD technology has advanced considerably over this seventy-three year period and so has the legislation put in place to reduce emissions of SO{sub}2 and improve air quality. This paper provides a chronological review of the application of FGD systems on UK power plant, discussing the legislation that has been implemented, the generation and emission control strategies available to UK power companies and the design and performance of the FGD technology installed or under development to meet the legislative requirements.
