In December 1998 an on-line machine diagnosis systems based on structure-born noise measurements was commissioned at the 2 × 800 MW VEAG Sehwarze Pumpe Power Plant. The system monitors 77 equipment units with 240 measuring points from cooling water pumps, through drive turbines and coal pulverizers to induced draughts and fresh air ventilators. 17 monitoring computers assess the machine conditions and transmit alarm protocols and structure-borne noise spectra to a control panel. This report presents the results obtained from the monitoring and diagnosis, together with the mode of working currently employed and the operator's experience. Furthermore, the notional objectives and technical requirements are specified, and the structure of the system described.
