The percentage of coals in the fuel range with a low ash content and a low Hardgrove Index has steadily increased over the past few years at units B-E of the Scholven Power Station. This and the relatively poor comminution rate in the pulverising system, has resulted in the percentage of unbumed carbon in the fly ash occasionally rising above 10%. A retrofit of the classifiers was identified as being the most economical measure to increase the efficiency of the pulverising system. Therefore it was decided initially as a pilot project to retrofit the classifiers in Scholven's UnitE. Finally, following an EU-wide invitation to tender, the static-dynamical classifier Type LSKS 28 ZD-S manufactured by Loesche was ordered.
