To build a golf course that fits seamlessly into the existing landscape, and then to maintain it to the highest standards usually requires two talented managers working in concert with each other. It is rare when you find one person that can fill bothroles. Paul Ellwood, CGCS, has done just that since the first shovelful of dirt was moved at The Gallery at Dove Mountain outside of Tucson, Ariz., nine years ago. "I'm a registered landscape architect in the state of Iowa, and had been in the landscapecontracting business for 15 years prior to getting involved in golf," says Ellwood. "About 18 years ago, when construction started slowing down in the Phoenix market, I ended up taking over two golf courses for the developer I worked for. After learningthe golf course superintendent business, I went on to the Del Webb company. That's when my transition was made from being in the landscape design and construction business to the golf construction and maintenance business."
