Moxidectin: A therapeutic alternative for the treatment of generalized demodicosis.

The objective of this report was to describe the use of Moxidectin in cases of generalized demodicosis, where milbemycin oxime or oral ivermectin were to be avoided. The authors treated four dogs. These were two Old English Sheepdogs (one two years and the other six years of age, both suffering from generalized pustulose amitraz refractory demodicosis that had been treated for a year and three years respectively), a female half breed Border Collie (6 months of age, treated for three months with complete failure) and a three month old Mastiff with 80% of its body affected with serious generalized pustulose demodicosis, that had not received previous acaricidal treatment. All of them received daily doses of 400mcg/kg of a 0.2% Moxidectin solution (already used in lambs) orally, as well as antibacterial and supportive therapy according to individual needs. Clinical improvement was observed after 7 to 15 days of treatment and there was no skin shedding after two or three months; the drug was administrated for a month after the skin shedding was negative. The solution was palatable and no side effects were observed. No relapses have yet been reported. Even though the number of treated animals was low, Moxidectin appears to be a good endectocide for treatment of generalized refractory Demodicosis.
