The ideal drugs are those to which pathogens are most susceptible and yet cause the least damage to the host animal. Factors to be taken into account when selecting and using drugs to control infectious diseases in horses are: pathogen susceptibility, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic aspects, rational use of antibiotics to avoid the development of resistance, use of professionally determined dosages, clinical efficiency, and an awareness of new drug developments and drug delivery systems.
