Landscape Manager Fran Blanchard and Landscape Gardener Sue Crowther handle all aspects of landscaping for the Boston Region of Historic New England, the oldest, largest and most comprehensive regional preservation organization in the country. Landscaping, as with many occupations, was once the domain of men. World War II changed all that when women began replacing men who had been called up to serve in the armed forces. Not only were women appearing in factories, they were serving in the Army, Navyand Coast Guard. Women pilots even flew replacement planes to England.
