Longitudinally welded HFI pipes are increasingly coming into use in the offshore sector, in competition with seamless pipes. The precondition for their use is the capability for production of pipes with ever-greater wall thicknesses. Welding technology plays a central role in this context. This article describes, in particular, the influence of welding frequency, since a minimal value is specified for this in numerous product standards, despite the fact that only product properties should, in principle, be emphasised in such contexts. The aspects examined here indicate that frequency is an important influencing factor, but only one of many, and must therefore be viewed within the overall context.
