Over 80% of horses outside disease surveillance systems

Over 80% of horses in Ireland are outside disease surveillance systems, according to a meeting of the Irish Thoroughbred Breeders' Association, Horse Sport Ireland and Veterinary Ireland.The meeting looked at the importance of equine surveillance systems and the RESPE (Reseau d'Epidemio-Surveillance en Pathologie Equine). Dr Des Leadon told the meeting that there is not even full compliance with the Thoroughbred population. He said the Equine Centre's core functions of diagnostics and Code of Practice testing showed that 1,456 Thoroughbred mares had no CEM swabs in 2012. He pointed out that: "18% of Ireland's horse population are thoroughbreds, 82% are other breeds. That's 82% of Ireland's horse population that we don't know anything about in terms of Code of Practice."
