Gastric dilation is, he said, a true small animal emergency, unlike a large number of cases vets see out of hours. "If we don't manage it properly they will die. It requires medical and then the appropriate surgical treatment." While possibly 25% of dogs may die before they get to the vet, less than 10% die if the situation and animal is managed properly, he said.
