BREA, Calif. — In 1982, Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI) sold its first pet insurance policy to television's Lassie. More than 1 million pets have been insured since. Founded 25 years ago, VPI devoted its first 2 years to creating a blueprint for America's first medical plan for pets. During its first year, VPI sold 6,557 policies to dog and cat owners in California. Today as it celebrates its 25th birthday, more than 400,000 pets are insured with VPI pet insurance and more than 1,600 companies offerit as a voluntary benefit to employees, according to a company release.
