When valve industry personnel conjure up images of process valves, the somewhat oddly shaped knife gate valve doesn't often come to mind, at least not right away. Perhaps because our introduction to valves of any type was probably turning on the water faucet as a child, we have a mental expectation of a rotary mechanism of some sort. Picturing a flat, rectangular gate stopping the flow through a round pipe (or pipeline) seems a bit unnatural. But that's precisely what a knife gate valve does - and why it's suited t tasks that typical ball, plug, and wedge gate valves can't handle.
