Most varieties in the U.S. have been described in the Potato Journal of the Potato Association of America by potato breeders upon release. Variety descriptions are necessary for inspectors to identify whether the plants in the field are similar to what has been described. When plants are obviously different from a known description, or admixture of different plant types is found, the seed lot is not certified. Tolerances for variety mixtures are often as strict as for virus.
