DESIGNERS WORK TO IMPROVE DURABILITY AND IMPACT STRENGTH AS THEY INCORPORATE THE MATERIAL INTO GAS TURBINES. Research has been ongoing since the 1950s regarding the potential of ceramics in turbomachinery applications. Due to their properties, ceramics could open the door to higher temperature operation and all the advantages that would bring - high temperature durability, light weight, lower cost than superalloys, less need for component cooling, improved fuel efficiency, and power output and lowered emissions.
