Gas turbine manufacturers are increasingly turning to coating systems to improve gas turbine performance and operation. New technologies, such as vapor phase deposition, aluminum coatings, multicoating systems, and coating materials to handle various fuel compositions, are extending the capabilities of coating systems. Aluminum coatings are being used to improve the oxidation and corrosion resistance of gas turbine components at high temperature. These coatings can be used either as additions to or substitutes for Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBCs). Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) processes can deposit materials, such as aluminum, to protect internal cooling cavities of components (Figure 1). Recent blade and vane designs using superalloys, such as Rene 80, incorporate multicoating systems: TBCs on the external surfaces and aluminum by CVD on the internal cavities.
