Siemens Builds on Tradition: The old engineering works at Gorlitz, Germany has been transformed into the firm's state-of-the-art industrial steam turbine center

150 years ago Gorlitz Maschinenbau Gmbh was established in the city of Gorlitz on the River Neisse. At that time Germany extended into what is now Poland. Gorlitz Maschinenbau was in the center of a large domestic market for locomotives and stationary steam engines and later, steam turbines came into production. Since 1945 (when the river became the eastern frontier of Germany in the settlement after the Second World War), the factory became the main East German works for steam turbine production. It supplied steam turbines for power plants and combined heat and power (CHP) schemes for countries mainly in the sphere of influence of the former Soviet Union. Gorlitz was thus a major supplier to the Cuban Sugar industry.
