Tokyo Electric Power Company's (TEPCO) Kawasaki Thermal Power Station Group 1 is an advanced combined cycle, featuring Mitsubishi's steam-cooled M701G2 gas turbine (Figures 1,2). The combined cycle is a part of a project to replace a conventional six-unit steam plant of 1,050 MW that has supplied power to the Tokyo metropolitan area for over 40 years. Eventually, 1,050 MW of steam power will be replaced by 3,000 MW of combined cycle power (Figure 3). The new combined cycle consists of three single-shaft blocks of 500 MW. This is the first commercial application of the 334 MW M701G2. In hot condition, the single-shaft blocks can reach full load in 50 minutes from ignition. The combined cycle has demonstrated 59.1% efficiency (LHV) under site conditions, says Ryuta Kawakami, Deputy Manager at TEPCO's Thermal Power Plant Engineering Center.
