THE success of any Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) system relies on the effective combination of a n u m be r of different technologies being applied to the prevailing ground conditions and project circumstances. The basic combination of systems includes the drill rig, the down hole tools such as the drill bit and reaming tools, the guidance/ steering system and the drilling fluid COMPANIES AND PRODUCTS There are numerous drill rig manufacturers around the world, designing and supplying a wide variety and sizes and operating types. Some rigs work on a'dry'drilling principle where the bore is produced using compressed air to remove spoil and cool the boring head with very little lubricating fluid being added to the boring process. An example of such a manufacturer is Zoomlion Powermole, a China/UK-based company that is one of the pioneers of dry drilling technology.
