THE Delhi metro project achieved a milestone with all the tunnelling work on the first phase of Line 2 fully completed with the breakthrough of the last tunnel section between Delhi Main and Chawri Bazaar on September 4. During tunnelling in extremely difficult areas like Nai Sarak, Chawri Bazaar, Chandni Chowk, or Hauz Qazi, the engineers had to face many challenges to ensure complete safety of the buildings above. The 11 km long line running from Delhi University (Vishwa Vidyalaya) to Central Secretariat involves tunnelling over a distance of 4 km using two different types of TBMs, according to soil conditions.
