Apollo says goodbye to Dunlop brand: African rollout for Vredestein range

RECENTLY THE DUNLOP BRAND - which traces its lineage back to John Boyd Dunlop's 1888 pneumatic tyre patent - underwent a change of ownership in 32 national markets. Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI), trademark holder of the brand in Asia and part of Africa, and 25 per cent stakeholder in the Goodyear Dunlop joint-ventures in Europe, North America and Australasia, acquired the rights to the Dunlop brand name in a further 30 African countries and two bordering on the Indian Ocean. The handover was made as part of a US$60 million deal with ApolloTyres shortly before the Indian tyre maker announced its $2.5 billion Cooper Tire & Rubber acquisition.
