EPA Scrap Tyre Proposals - Burying 20 Years of US Environmental Progress? Tyre industry organisations voice opposition to mooted rule changes

For many years the Environmental Protection Agency has sanctioned whole scrap tyres for use as a supplemental solid fuel in the US, but all of this may soon change. On June 4 the agency proposed a change in policy that may see scrap whole tyres and shredded tyres without their metal content removed (along with numerous other materials) reclassified as solid waste, a move that would significantly alter the way they are permitted to be used. Many influential voices in the US tyre industry are concerned any such change of regulations may place two decades of environmental cleanup success at risk.
