THIS CASE study concludes with highlights of actions taken to correct inefficiencies in a compressed air system that resulted in annual energy savings of $500,000/year at Solutia's Greenwood, S.C., plant. Once problems were identified (see Part I, www. chemicalprocessing.com/articles/2013/cut-air-consump-tion-part-i/), the project plan included installing: 1.new dryers and mist-eliminating filters; 2.three pressure/flow controllers, one backpressure/ flow controller and two 30,000-gal air storage tanks; 3.new piping and retrofits to existing piping system; 4.a programmable logic control (PLC) compressor automation system; and 50a compressed-air management information system (MIS). The facility also repaired compressors performing below optimum levels.
