摘要

Over the past several years, the number of apheresis collections, especially collections of double red blood cells (R2), increased significantly; however, the number still remains low relative to collections for whole blood. To date, there has been no infectious disease risk assessment in apheresis donors. As part of the routine surveillance for blood-borne infections among blood collections by the American Red Cross (ARC) Blood Services, blood donation data, including testing results for major viral infections, are maintained in a research database and are examined regularly to identify possible changes that may have implications for blood safety.1 The number of apheresis collections by the ARC and the available data in the centralized research database provide an opportunity to examine the prevalence and incidence of these infections among apheresis collections. As part of the ongoing review of viral marker test results, we observed an apparent increase in the prevalence rates among apheresis donations. We
