Molecular advances come of age (Part II)

In recognition of new information appearing in the world literature some 30 years ago focusing on the clinical course and histopathology of lymphomas, coupled with the generally very poor appreciation of these entities in Africa, the South African Lymphoma Study Group was established to promote understanding of malignancies arising from the immune system. To bridge the gap between first and third world immediate attention was given to developing a strong international presence and, from inception, has been the scientific guidance of Professor James Armitage as the organising co-chairman.Over the years this biennial conference has grown impressively and the quality and relevance of presentations reflected in the almost universal attendance of those South African investigators actively working in this area. Gratifyingly delegates come from much further afield and, increasingly, beyond local borders. Of equal importance is the international recognition accorded the well-established four-day educational and intellectual experience readily evident from the stellar visiting faculty from other parts of the world.
