WHEN I WAS ASKED to moderate the OTR Tire Repair Panel at the 2016 TIA Off-the-Road Tire Conference in San Diego, I knew I would enjoy this assignment. One reason was that tire repairing has been a major part of my career in the tire industry. I was also looking forward to the tremendous amount of knowledge that this group of experienced industry experts would bring to the presentation. As I considered the background of the panel members, I suddenly realized that all of them but one had not been born when I first became involved in the tire industry in 1954 at 17 years of age. John Garrett with REMA Tip Top was 3 years old and I think that's why he had the most to say. I sure wish I had been exposed to the knowledge that exists on this panel when I started out as an extremely green farm boy that knew very little about tires. My platoon sergeant told me in basic training that I was as green as corn in July. The fact is there was very little training available, especially in tire repairing.
