When I went to southern Germany to evaluate a new giant tire shearography inspection system, I never dreamed that it was being manufactured in the very beautiful and very small Bavarian village of Neubeuern (approximately 50 miles south of Munich). Steinbichler Optotechnik, the company manufacturing this unit, is known worldwide for their scanning and inspection equipment. The equipment that Steinbichler is developing goes well beyond the tire industry, but their specialty is tire inspection technology; they have shearography tire inspection equipment in use throughout the world. Their new giant tire inspection unit is capable of handling up to a 45/65-45 and called the INTACT 2800. The 2800 designation is the diameter of the opening in the autoclave in millimeters.
