In November 2008 I returned from 10 days on board the Africa Mercy after having organised the 2nd Liberian Anaesthetic Conference and inspected projects which a group of us support at an orphanage, a church and a school. I was accompanied by three UK based consultant anaesthetists, the leader of a Gospel choir based in South London and by two journalists, one from the Sunday Post in Scotland and the other representing the Voice a London based weekly (fig 1).
