Coolwater tropicals

Tropicals in coolwater? Roy Osmint discusses why this may not be such an odd statement to make... What has the Paradise fish (Macropodus operations), White cloud mountain minnow (Tanichthys albonubes), Golden medaka (Oryzias latipes) and Mosquito fish(Gambusia holbrooki) (Gambusia affinis) got in common? On the face of it, not too much! All right, there are perhaps one or two tenuous links that could be formed for certain of them, such as size and approximate geographical origin. But even these do not extend to all. So what common factor might there be to bring together these seemingly unconnected species in such a way as to justify them being dealt with in a single article? A clue to the answer can be found in the title 'Coolwater tropicals'. In itself an apparent contradiction in terms!
