Out of sight but not out of mind. Microscopic animals play an important part in the marine aquarium. In this article we will look at tiny animals that are hidden to the naked eye, but become visible and show their stunning diversity and beauty throughthe microscope. You might think that 'hidden' animals aren't of much interest, after all they can't be seen it is natural that most aquarists pay little attention to the 'hidden world' of their aquarium. However, the microscopic organisms - bacteria, algae, protozoans and other tiny animats - are the decomposers of the aquarium lust like in nature, the 'bugs' of the aquarium are essential for the biological balance in the system Without bacteria that feed on and decompose waste products, your aquariumwould collapse. Without microscopic animals that take care of detritus and feed on dead algae and animals, your system would suffer. And without microscopic algae that are food for many organisms, your system would lack an important food source.
