EFFECT OF DIFFERENT ORGANIC MANURES AND NITROGEN LEVELS ON PRODUCTIVITY AND QUALITY OF JATI TOBACCO (NICOTIANA TABACUM) IN WEST BENGAL

A field experiment was conducted in two consecutive years (2005-06 and 2006-07) at CTRI Research Station, Dinhata to study the effect of different sources of green manuring, levels of FYM and nitrogen on yield and quality of Jati tobacco under West Bengal. Results revealed that significantly higher green, cured and first grade leaf yield of Jati tobacco, higher gross and net returns as well as benefit: cost ratio, nicotine and nitrogen content of cured leaf were observed in green manuring plots withdhaincha as compared to green manuring with other crops. Application of FYM @ 30 tonnes/ha significantly increased the green, cured and first grade leaf yield, gross and net returns of Jati tobacco as compared to control. Significantly highest N, P, K and nicotine content in cured leaf of tobacco was obtained in 30 tonnes FYM /ha as compared to other levels. Application of 100 kg N/ ha significantly increased the productivity, economic returns, improved chemical composition of cured leaf and available nutrient status of soil than 50 kg N/ha.
