REINFORCING THE FRONT LINE

Early into the 2005 season, hurricanes Katrina and Rita bore down on the Gulf Coast. Utility suppliers launched an all-out assault to get wire, poles, transformers and hardware to the front line. Storms happen around the gulf coast frequently enough to make planning for them a matter of good business practice. Like all of the utilities in the path of Katrina, Mississippi Power Co. (Gulfport, Mississippi), Entergy (New Orleans, Louisiana) and various cooperatives have formal storm plans they update annually. The plans are both tactical and operational.
