Anew forklift buzzing around Entergy's transmission warehouse in Little Rock, Arkansas, has been modified with a hydraulic clamp to carry heavy, uneven loads - such as giant transmission poles weighing up to 15 tons - steadily and single-handedly. The customized forklift was envisioned by an Entergy Continuous Improvement (ECI) team that set out to improve the safety and efficiency of warehouse employees. "Team members approached this project with vision, ingenuity and creativity," said Mike Smith, manager of supply chain operations. "When they couldn't find what they were looking for in the marketplace, they took the initiative to design it themselves. They ended up with a new lifting device that represents a breakthrough in personnel safety and productivity."
