My family and friends encouraged me to get in the industry. My mom worked for an electric cooperative in its payroll department many years ago, and I also had close family and friends from church who worked at the same cooperative. I started as a groundsman for Dominion Virginia Power. I was basically an assistant to the linemen. There was no climbing involved, and I was mainly responsible for putting material together and keeping the truck clean. I remember working overtime on the first day of my career because we had lines down. The crew knew I wouldn't know what to get, but they sent me to the truck anyway. I opened every bin, grabbed everything that looked useful and took all of it back hoping something would work for the job. When I got back to the guys, they just laughed at me. I still see them, and they give me a hard time about it.
