摘要

The objective of this study was twofold. The first was to survey foundries in the Midwest and solicit information regarding injury data and their associated costs. The second goal was to associate injury data to specific machines and/or processescommonly found in the foundry industry. Together, both of these objectives aided in identifying areas where potential improvement can be made to reduce workmen compensation cost.A survey of gray and ductile iron foundries was conducted to identify problems resulting in the occurrence of occupational injuries and illnesses. Aggregate data were evaluated to identify departments and jobs that present risks of occupational illnessesand injuries. More specifically, it was determined that eye injuries were the most commonly reported injury, followed by burns, cuts and lacerations, and low back injuries. Due to high cost and frequency of occurrence, back injuries were the most costlyinjuries. The finishing department accounted for 33% of the injuries. This could be attributed to the labor-intensive and repetitive work performed in this department. Associated costs were also collected and discussed, to identify potential cost savingswithin the industry.
