The application of thermal analysis to predict chilling tendency has often been studied in gray iron melts and the implementation of dual cup thermal analysis has been proposed as a reliable tool for the assessment of chilling tendency. This procedure combined with other techniques based on standard chill wedge test castings was used to refine chilling tendency evaluation and applied to a high carbon equivalent melt. Optical microscopy, secondary electron microscopy and image analysis were implemented to developing a new chilling tendency indicator: the equivalent chill index. This index was favorably compared to the standard clear chill and total chill measurements on the same wedge casting.
