A number of bismuth-modified red and semi-red brasses have been introduced to meet the need for essentially lead-free alloys for plumbing products and other applications. It is inevitable that leaded and bismuth-containing scrap will be mixed either at the foundry or in scrap collection, refining and ingot manufacturing. Concern about the effect of bismuth (and selenium) on the mechanical properties of the much used leaded brasses has been expressed. Additions of 0-1% Bi with 0-0.45% Se were made to leaded-red brass C83600 and 0-0.27% Bi to C84400. Tensile bars were tested at 23℃ and 26℃ (73 and 500F) and Charpy bars at 23℃ (73F). In alloy C83600, Bi concentrations of up to 0.3% have a negligible effect on the properties, and the data suggest that up to 0.7% Bi alone can meet mechanical property specifications. The presence of 0.1-0.15% Se further reduces the mechanical properties of C83600. Bi up to 0.27% had no measurable effect on the mechanical properties of C84400.
