Measurements of dissolved oxygen and sulfur in desulfurization ladles using calcium carbide (CaC{sub}2) established that the degree of desulfurization was much poorer than theoretically possible. Desulfunzation was found to be controlled, not by calcium carbide but, rather, by lime (CaO)-a theoretically less effective desulfurizer, which is present in large amounts. Although the results are unambiguous, the reasons are poorly understood. Desulfurization appears to approach chemical equilibrium, which suggests that measurements of dissolved oxygen might be utilized for the rapid determination of sulfur in connection with ladle desulfurization.
