Thermophysical properties of A356 aluminum, class 40 gray iron and CF8M stainless steel

Computer modeling techniques are being increasingly utilized to assist foundrymen in developing casting processes. The software codes often incorporate sophisticated computational algorithms to simulate the physical principles of heat transfer, fluid flow and solidification dynamics. Accurate simulation and design using these technologies also require reliable input data of the thermophysical properties of (1) the molding materials, (2) the metal alloy and (3) the interface between the hot metal and the cooler mold. These data must be known for the entire temperature range of interest and should include the critical mushy zone wherein most microstructural development occurs during casting. Thermophysical properties of casting alloys of interest to foundrymen include: transformation temperatures, density, specific heat, latent heat, thermal diffusivity/conductivity, electrical conductivity, viscosity and surface tension. The applications of existing measurement techniques to molten metals, as well as newer techniques under development, are reviewed and typical data presented for A356 aluminum, class 40 gray iron and CF8M stainless steel.
