Fishing the Mitghell

Behind Mossman (in north Queensland) is one of the highest mountain ranges in Australia, the main coastal range where peaks of almost 1,400 m attract some of the highest rainfalls in the land. Annual average falls of over 4.5 m irrigate the Daintree rainforests. However, much of the water is also siphoned off to the west via Bushy Creek and the McLeod River, both being the main feeders of the perennial Mitchell River. The Mitchell rises near Mareeba and swings west at its junction with the McLeod River - north from Mount Carbine - flowing almost in a direct line to the Gulf of Carpentaria and forming the natural boundary of the Gulf country and the Cape York Peninsula. The Walsh, Lynd, Palmer, and Alice River empty into the mighty Mitchell, making it one of the largest capacity water flows in the tropics. It is also the north's sandiest river.
