The Wssel Islands

The Wessel Islands are about as remote as you can get in the Australian tropics, and with bluewater fishing that makes the trip well worthwhile. For many reasons I have never fished the waters off the Gove Peninsula, even though they are rated amongstthe best in the world. Thus when Trevor Hosie of Nomad Charters invited me up to try this blue water-fishing scene I readily accepted. On arrival, I discovered that since my last stopover, the Gove Peninsula is in boom mode - a new airport, complete with custom and security personnel were the first indication things have changed. The town of Nhulunbuy is growing rapidly because the local mining company is doubling its bauxite production, whilst a gas pipeline is coming from the Timor Fields, via PortKeats, and across the Top End to the Gove Peninsula, to boost the local demand for electricity.
