I'll never forget the first tailor I caught out of Pittwater. It wasn't only my first real sport-fish, but also my first fish on a hard body lure and my first fish caught trolling. It was late morning and we were three good mates, surrounded by national park and glass-still waters. The destination for the day was the Hawkesbury River, and our target was actually jewfish. Needless to say we didn't get any jewfish that day, but we discovered the tenacious tailor. From the first I was awestruck by the ferocity of the tailor's fight, and enthralled by its aerial theatrics. In fact, I was the one that was hooked! The surprise of being caught off-guard when the line starts to scream is what makes trolling so exciting. The funny thing was that if you looked at the patch of water where the fish came out of, there was no way of knowing there was a school of tailor lurking below the surface. All over Australia there are tailor hidden below the surface, ready and willing to brighten up the day of anyone prepared to drag some lures through them. This is where trolling for tailor pays dividends.
