US Leaf Report 2007: Looking Back on a Bad Season Not Such a Bad Crop

The 2007 growing season was one of the most difficult in memory for almost all US tobacco farmers. But the 2007 tobacco crop was for the most part passable, if somewhat short, reminding everyone that tobacco is one of the most drought-tolerant crops grown in the New World The misfortunes began at Easter, when in most of the tobacco belt an exceptionally late freeze devastated plant supplies. Then a long-running drought with few breaks ran through October. The drought began early and lasted right up to the end of growing season, and it wound up with a long period of intense heat.
