We move on from the completed restoration of the engine and gearbox to the rear axle, which houses the rear hydraulics, differential, rear axles and brakes. Because the tractor is a late model it used the tractor brakes to operate the handbrake. On earlier models a separate disc brake unit, which was mounted on the left-hand side of the axle casing, was used. In order to inspect the brakes the brake drum must be removed. First, the shoes need to be slackened off. To do this insert a flat screwdriver into the slot in the rear back plate and turn the adjuster wheel towards the front of the tractor. Repeat this on the other side and then, with the drum off, the brake shoe assemblies can be inspected and removed/cleaned.
