Cadmium was recovered from scrap domestic,sealed NiCd batteries by the use of chlorination. The techniquewas efficient and economic and gave recoveries of almost100percent. The work also demonstrated that it is feasible torecirculate the chlorinating gas, making the processenvironmentally acceptable. Chlorine and hydrogen chloridewere found to be suitable chlorinating agents. The latter wasproduced by the controlled combustion of polyvinyl chloridescrap, thus allowing the recycling of a toxic, commerciallyvaluable material while disposing of two waste materials. Thetechnique and equipment used were simple, enhancing theprospects for a pilot-scale version of the process.
