Living Breakwaters is a proposal for the Rebuild by Design Competition to rebuild ecological infrastructure that will reduce risk, grow environmental systems and foster social resiliency on shore.How can coastal landscapes serve as protective ecological infrastructure for growing cities? How can we measure, test, and rebuild these critical - and endangered - shallow-water ecosystems? Our Living Breakwaters proposal for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Rebuild by Design competition advances our ongoing exploration of the critical relationship between water, nature, and urban culture. This study germinated with a mapping project of the outer harbor and Jamaica Bay in 2007, developed into the concept "Oyster-tecture" as part of Rising Currents at the Museum of Modern Art (2010), and has been recently piloted in twoecological installations in New York Harbor.
