This presentation will focus, from a social epidemiology perspective, on two areas of research in which Dr Johnston has been involved for many years: childhood obesity; a major risk factor for Type 2 diabetes and adolescent substance use, including alcohol use. Both of these public health problems have undergone a major paradigm shift in the way in which they are conceptualized, evolving from a predominant perspective of individual responsibility to one in which they are understood as largely determined by environmental influences and perpetuated by underlying biological changes. This has both resulted from, and contributed to, the application of systematic research to these problems and the behaviours underlying them.
