Until the end of 1997, Tioxide was the world's second largest TiO2 pigment producer. Huntsman Corp. had been hoping to regain this position with the acquisition of most of Tronox's assets in December, but in the end Huntsman's hopes were dashed when Tronox's management, backed by its leading shareholders, decided to maintain their company's independence.
