SOUTH AFRICA: Exxaro Plans to Shut Down Empangeni Ilmenite Smelter & MSP

On 1 December, Exxaro (headquartered at Pretoria) announced that it is now planning for the closure of its KZN Sands operations within five years, i.e. by the end of 2014.During the first six months of 2009, KZN Sands produced: 51,000 tonnes of chlorinatable slag; 9000 tonnes of sulfatable slag; 10,000 tonnes of natural rutile; 18,000 tonnes of zircon; and 54,000 tonnes of pig iron. It reported an operating loss of Rnd 110 million on sales revenues of Rnd 273 million.
