Erection and ejaculation as symptoms of cauda equina syndrome in a dog.

A case of lumbosacral disease (cauda equina syndrome) with untypical signs is presented. A 3.5-year-old male Bernese Mountain Dog was presented with lower back pain. The pain was always exacerbated when climbing stairs. Then the dog would lie down and sometimes erection and ejaculation would occur. On the basis of clinical and radiological examinations, as well as magnetic resonance imaging, lumbosacral disease was diagnosed. Dorsal laminectomy L7/S1 was performed. Following surgery, all clinical signs were resolved. The reason for erection and ejaculation was probably irritation of the spinal nerves S1-S3 which activated the plexus pelvinus, nervi corporis cavernosi and/or nervus pudendus and nervus dorsalis penis. In dogs with lumbosacral disease, additional clinical signs of erection and ejaculation may be observed. Laminectomy in the L7/S1 space also leads to resolution of these clinical signs.
